A Soft Start and a Sweet Ending

This morning began early—3 a.m. early. I crawled out of bed, still half wrapped in dreams, and got dressed in the quiet of the house. I pulled my Momento card for the day and was met with The Clover—a soft promise of good things to come.

After that, I checked the weather: clear skies with a small chance of rain after nightfall. I marked the stand as open for the day again. Dinner was already planned out last night—one less thing to think about. Dameion still had some work to finish on the chicken coop, so that would be his task for the day.

Next came school prep. I sorted through yesterday’s work, got clipboards and folders in order, laminated and cut out today’s flashcards and posters, and made sure everything was ready to go. I also prepped my daily grocery and school supply order—though I couldn’t place it until 6 a.m., it was all queued up and waiting.

With that done, I moved on to clearing the stand camera. So far, the new solar panel was working perfectly. We’d had one visitor yesterday, though I don’t think they purchased anything. I made a mental note: I really need to get some business cards printed and put out at the stand.

By 6 a.m., I was able to officially place the Walmart order, though I was still waiting for enough sun to start outdoor chores. Dan Dan the Chicken Man (yes, that’s our rooster—thank Dameion for the name) was already crowing to greet the morning.

As the sun began to peek over the hills and the rest of the house stayed still, I quietly fed the turtle. Then I moved on to quick-cleaning the back rooms and tidying the living room before pausing to feed my sourdough starter. The sun was almost fully up now, so it was time for the dogs. I took things slow today, spacing them out so I didn’t strain myself.

After Cain’s walk, the girls woke up. I got the TV on for them—it was Aria’s turn to choose, and she picked the Latias and Latios Pokémon movie. Laundry was already done unless I managed to miraculously find just enough to fill the washer one more time. By the time I got to Freya, Walmart was on their way with the grocery order. I finished up with Bingo just as the delivery arrived, and Jess was pulling in.

Between walking Lu and Alister, Jess got here, and the day truly began.

While Jess and I caught up, the girls had their breakfast sticks, then went off to clean their room before we started school. We listened to a read-aloud, kicked off a fun “Does it Melt?” experiment, and worked through a few coloring sheets and flashcards before it was time for lunch and nap.

During naptime, I spent some quiet moments with Jess and did a bit of light cleaning. Soon enough, it was time to head to the bus stop and pick up Lily. Once we were home and had a small transition window to settle in, the girls jumped back into their schoolwork. They worked on their 3D globes and began piecing together a sweet summer memory book.

Later, we prepped the dough for seashell cookies we’ll bake tomorrow. For dinner, the girls had pizza and headed to bed with full bellies and sleepy eyes.

As the night cooled down, the girls came back out one last time to help me make a seashell pasta salad. After that final bit of magic, we all nestled into our beds and settled in for the night, hearts full and minds already drifting toward tomorrow.
